represented by Pequod Co.
Andrew Roberts (b. 1995, Tijuana) is a Mexican visual artist.
His practice begins with a historical exploration on the parallel development of war technology and the entertainment industry, analyzing the role of images as operational weapons in military conflicts and their poetic, political and aesthetic ramifications in the production of capital and death. His artwork primarily takes the form of multimedia narrative and speculative fiction, materialized across space through digital animations and immersive installations in the company of objects, actions and essayistic writings.
His animations and installations have been exhibited in China, England, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Australia, Spain, Mexico, and the United States. Selected solo exhibitions include Pequod Co. (Mexico City, 2020); and CECUT (Tijuana, 2017). Roberts’ work has been exhibited amongst others at kurimanzutto (MX, 2021); Lodos (MX, 2020); Galería Santa Fé (CO, 2020); Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (US, 2018); Centro Cultural Universitario Tlatelolco (MX, 2018); and San Diego Art Institute (US, 2017). His films have been screened in festivals such as the Whitstable Biennale at the Tate Modern (London, 2018).
Among his awards are included on two occasions the Acquisition Prize at the Encuentro Nacional de Arte Joven (MX), in their XLI (2021) and XXXIX (2019) editions; the Acquisition Prize at the III Bienal Nacional del Paisaje (MX, 2019); and the First Place at the VII Bienal Internacional de Arte Universitario (MX, 2018). He is a recipient of the FONCA grant in the Alternative Media category of the Young Creators program (2019-2020); and the PECDA Baja California grant (2016-2017). In recent years his work has been included in public and private collections such as Colección Fundación Alumnos 47 and Colección R+S.
In collaboration with his longtime partner Mauricio Muñoz, he is the co-director of Deslave, an artist-run space based in Tijuana since 2017. Together, they have curated projects for Material Art Fair on two occasions (Mexico City, 2019 and 2020); Swab Art Fair (Barcelona, 2019) SEVENTH Gallery (Melbourne, 2019) and Human Resources (Los Angeles, 2018). Roberts and Muñoz occasionally collaborate together as artists; their duo practice has been exhibited at Delaplane (San Francisco, 2021). Twice as Deslave, they have been recipients of the Patronato de Arte Contemporáneo grant (2018 and 2020).
